What is a Spiral Gear?

Spiral gear is also known as crossed helical gear, or screw gear, which is a type of helical gear used for transmitting motion between non-intersecting shafts. These gears are characterized by having the same helix angle in opposite directions when used in parallel shafts.

Spiral gears allow skew mating of gear shafts. Unlike traditional gears where axes of rotation are parallel, screw gears can be designed to have skewed axes, crossing each other without intersecting. This design introduces a screw motion during an engagement, featuring constant sliding of the gear flanks.

Screw gears are suitable for applications with moderate torques and speeds, such as drives for machine tools. They exhibit lower transmission efficiency due to the sliding processes on the gear flanks. Despite this, they offer benefits such as low-noise operation and the ability to be shifted axially without significant impact on power transmission.

Applications of Spiral Gear?

In technical applications, such as gear systems, screw gears offer unique features. The helix angles are opposite when used in parallel shafts, providing a distinct advantage. However, for shaft angles other than parallel, an arbitrary helix angle can be chosen. It's important to note that helical gears have point contacts and exhibit lower efficiency than gears with parallel or perpendicular shafts.
